We were not the first, nor the last who chose a favorite combo for the vacation – cruise around Caribbean (you can check my other blog here) and a few days spent at the Miami Beach.
Through Airbnb/Booking.com you can find tons of nice apartments directly at the Beach. However, we didn’t want to spend every day on the beach, since there is so much to explore! Plan ahead, if you want to balance out all the adventures, neighborhood exploration, night life at Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue or at Lincoln Road and day trips to the Florida Keys, the Everglades or Orlando.
Trip to Key West
To ensure that also men’s dreams were fulfilled we started our stay in Miami with renting a Mustang and a Camaro – both Cabrio of course. We found a good deal through SIXT but the prices may have changed since. It is always good to do some research and compare the prices ahead.
We woke up early in the morning and were already on the road before 8 am. It is a long drive alongside the coast, so we planned a few stops. I recommend Bahia Honda State Park with natural sandy beaches and a historic railway bridge.
The Bahia Honda Bridge is an old bridge that served as a railroad in its beginnings. After it was hit by a hurricane in 1935 it was converted for an automobile use. After a new bridge was built in 1972 and the famous Bahia Honda Bridge became abandoned, couple spans were removed to allow boats to pass through.
After reaching the Key West we left the cars at the Duval Street (the main street in the island city) and we strolled around the Key West historic district. We explored Mallory Square as well as the Southernmost Point of the United States. We passed along the two most famous buildings in historic district that were occupied by prominent residents, the Ernest Hemingway House, where the writer lived from 1931 to 1939, and the Harry S. Truman Little White House, where the United States President spent 175 days of his time in office. The city was beautiful, with many great restaurants and bars to choose from, the atmosphere was amazing, I could easily spend there a few more days.
The next day the weather changed and Miami was hit by a tropical storm Gordon. We didn’t continue with the planned trip to Everglades. We drove around the South Beach and explored the Star Island (the guard let us drove around the neighborhood), Palm Island Park and Venetian Island. Another beautiful neighborhoods that we discovered were Coconut Grove and Bay Heights where we have seen dozens of peacocks walking around the streets.
We were also recommended to visit the Little Havana and the Design District, but we ended up at the Wyndwood Walls. To describe it, I felt like we were walking through an outdoor art museum, with walls covered in graffiti and beautiful street art. The area is home to many art galleries, shops, restaurants and bars.
If nothing that I mentioned interests of you, you can check the stores at the Aventura Mall, voted the best shopping mall in Miami. Or just simply lay on the beach and chill.
